Fisheries and aquaculture provide direct and indirect employment to over 500 million people.[1] In 2005, the worldwide per capita consumption of fish captured from wild fisheries was 14.4 kilograms, with an additional 7.4 kilograms harvested from fish farms.[2] In addition to providing food, modern fishing is also a recreational pastime.

The future of fishing in Alaska is a bright one. Let's all remember who we are really doing all of this for. From left to right you have Sebastian, Cohen and Kaiden. If we continue our sustainable healthly fishing practices, these guys will be working on the back deck in the near future.

Even across the vast sea, the passions and concerns of commercial fishermen remain the same.

Via Youtube: 'The Business of Fishing' aims to improve everyone's understanding of the business aspects of the UK fishing industry by showing some of the day-to-day and strategic challenges that fishing vessel owners face and how they overcome those challenges. The video shows the industry through the eyes of four different vessel owners from different fishing sectors and regions of the UK. The focus is on running a successful business while taking care of the fish stocks and the natural environment.

'The Business of Fishing' was screened for the first time at an event at the Mayfair Hotel in London on Tuesday 12 March 2013. At the screening event, the invited audience of policy makers, environmental NGOs, media and industry representatives each had the opportunity to meet vessel owners involved in the film and discuss some of the issues that it explored. A further launch event was held in Edinburgh the following week and several other screenings around the UK and in Brussels followed as popular demand grew. The film has been shown at a discussion event in the European Parliament and to DG Mare at the European Commission in Brussels, to the House of Commons all party fisheries committee in London.

During the salmon season in 2012, I snapped this pano while waiting to unload at Alaska General Seafoods in Ketchikan . If you look close, you can spot a massive cruise ship in the distance.

The Marine Stewardship Council protects global fish stocks by harnessing market forces to promote sustainability. MSC works with fisheries around the world and runs the world's leading independent certification and eco-labeling program for companies that embrace sustainable fishing practices. Sustainable fisheries catch fish in ways that protect other marine life and undersea habitats, and they do not pull fish from the ocean faster than they can reproduce and replenish their populations. Currently, some 7% of the world's edible seafood catch — over 4 million tons of seafood annually — are at some stage in the MSC programme with 24 fisheries certified and around 30 in full assessment. Additionally, MSC provides information for consumers so they can make an informed choice when buying seafood.

But much more needs to be done. Recent studies of the world's fisheries showed that if current trends continue unchanged, all fish and seafood species will collapse before mid-century. Less than one percent of the global ocean is protected from overfishing, and in international waters a free-for-all mentality prevails where commercial fishing is carried out indiscriminately.

Summer salmon season is finally here! The F/V Finally was the last boat to deliver at this year's salmon derby in Sitka. The Sitka Salmon Derby ended yesterday at 7:00 PM. Mike Vaugn is the first back to back winner in ages. According to locals, he caught the fish in the same area as last year. The winning prize is a 7000 dollar paycheck and the pride of knowing that you caught the “big one!” Kudos to everyone that participated in this years Salmon derby. Nearly 300 fish were submitted over the length of the contest!

The squid is a master of camouflage and possesses unique chromatophores, which are linked to a neuromuscular organ rather than the typical cell structure associated with other color changing organisms.  This uniqueness offers a muscular approach to camouflage, instead of being controlled hormonally like other organisms with chromatophores.  Whatever the approach, the result is simply amazing.  Make sure to watch this in HD for the full effect.

This strange honeycomb like organism came up in one of our night sets while fishing for squid in 2010.  I have not been able to figure out what his thing is.  Im hoping that someone out there recognizes this bizarre creature and solves an age old mystery for me.  This is, by far, one of the strangest things I have seen come out of the ocean.  Please help me figure out what it is.

NOAA has just released an Android only beta version of MyNOAACharts, which displays nearly 5000 charts that are available for offline use.  Currently the app allows for GPS positioning and charts can easily be downloaded by region.  Unfortunately, the charts can be a hefty download, so Wifi is suggested for initial downloading.  The app also includes 8 editions of Coastal Pilot, which offers additional navigation information that is hard to relay on charts.  This app is a huge step forward for tablet navigation on various kinds of vessels.  At this point, the charts are meant for reference only, but this is a huge blow to many app competitors that offer the same information for large price tags.  The app is likely to span out to other platforms; such as, iOS in the future.  If you would like to try the app for yourself and offer beta testing, check out the Google Play store here.

My early assessment of the app is totally positive.  The charts load perfectly on my Nexus 7 and the built-in GPS is very accurate.  This app is a great accompaniment  to the physical charts and the Coastal Pilot addition is priceless.  This is a must have app for any Android  user that travels by sea.  I can’t wait for the iOS version.  The price tag doesn’t hurt, either!  Enjoy!

As the blue and red king crab season comes to a conclusion on season 9 of the Deadliest Catch, many questions arise about the future of the younger generation of crab harvesters.  Jake Anderson is leaving the nest of the F/V Northwestern for the decks of the F/V Kiska Sea in hopes of running the vessel on his own someday.  Discovery confirms that the Kiska Sea will be a new boat on the Deadliest Catch this season for snow crab season.  Details of the Captain and Crew can be found here.   Scott Hillstrand also wants to find a place in the captain’s chair.  As for the Harris brothers, the Cornelia Marie is back in the hands of the family.  Jake and Josh were able to buy the commanding shares of the boat this spring.  However, the boat has been dormant since the last blue crab endeavor nearly two seasons ago, so there will be a ton of work to get the boat in ship shape again.  It appears the future of the Deadliest Catch is a bright and full of young ambitious faces.

Fishing for squid in front of Cannery Row, Monterey Bay California. Uncle Joe Davi passed away after this was shot. He was a pioneer in the squid,sardine fishery.

California Market Squid seining started again this April. Over the past three seasons, the squid fishery has easily reached their quota of 180,000 tons. Typically, the fishing is better in the fall, but many boats are able to find the squid throughout the spring and summer. Ideal ocean temperatures have provided record setting harvest over the past few years. The big question is weither the trend will continue. It will be interesting to see what develops this season.

Pursing the net is an art form, if you ask Rob Philpott. Most boats have switched to an auto purse device which just rips in the purse line and closes the bottom of the net quickly. However, there is a big difference between efficiency and finesse. New technology, such as the SeineMaster now allows for sensors all over the net to determine the depth, rate of decent, and the overall shape of the net. Soon, we will know all the secrets of the mighty Purse Master.

Gillnet fishing for salmon in Youngs Bay –Astoria Oregon.

A 20 million dollar a year industry in the state of Oregon….is under threat. Please read.

The fish being caught in this video are 3 to 7 year old fish which have made their way back to Youngs Bay because they were reared in Youngs Bay before they journeyed out to the ocean.

After 3 to 7 years in the ocean they return only to spawn—and then eventually die.

The Gillnet fisherman is able to intercept the fish before they die and bring this incredibly healthy meat to the general public for sale.

Unfair and untrue propaganda has made gillnetting out to be bad for our environment. In fact, this is a completely sustainable industry which promises healthy salmon for the general public to eat.

Most of the salmon caught are born in hatcheries which are funded by the commercial fisherman and subsidized by the power companies who built dams long ago which block the runs of salmon trying to get up the river. They cannot pass the dams to go and spawn.

This shot was taken on the decks of the Rose Lee during the summer of 2008. I can't wait for the summer salmon season. The first day of fishing this year is July 7th, for me. I'll be doing a king opener in Sitka on the F/V Quandary. Come on, salmon!

The 5ft-long specimen was hauled in by Michael Eisele, 44, in the waters off Norway last month.

If confirmed by the International Game Fishing Association, it will smash the previous world record of 98lbs 12oz for an Atlantic cod caught off New Hampshire in the United States in 1969.

Historical records claim that cod of 200lbs were once found in the seas, but these days a 10-year-old fish caught in the North Sea weighs between 24lbs and 33lbs on average.

I'm super stoked to sea the Coral Sea in southeast Alaska again this summer. This was the first boat I worked on, way back in 1998! With the advent of all the super seiners, I really hope this boat just comes out and slays the salmon this summer. I know the boat is fishy. The last time I fished on the boat, we easily caught over 1 million pounds. At today's market prices for pink salmon, that would be a great season. Hal Rayle narrates an expose' on the plans to build a copper mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska. near the heart of the salmon breeding waters. The deepest and most dangerous copper mine in all of North America. The mine will be built by a group of European consortiums with little or no interest in the salmon's welfare.

The salmon season has officially started this year in Alaska! This beautiful fish was caught in Southeast Alaska. Southeast is one of the few major producing salmon regions that harvest all species of salmon.

That’s Right!  It’s salmon time in Alaska!  Local fishermen will head out in early this morning for a 7 A.M. opener, which marks the start of the 2013 salmon season.  The webcam is a view is from the top of My Eyak, overlooking Cordova’s beautiful harbor.  Unfortunately, the weather forecast is a bit nasty.   Alaska doesn’t want to break free of winter’s icy grip this spring.  The local airport reported record lows this morning, too.  Regardless of the conditions wild caught salmon will be hitting dinner tables soon.   Copper River Reds will be wisked from the tiny port of Cordova and travel across the world within just a few days.  Fresh Alaskan salmon will hit stores by Friday.  Ever wonder how “Copper River Reds” got so popular?  Check out this recent article:

It’s been 30 years since Jon Rowley first persuaded a few salmon fishermen on Alaska’s Copper River that they might be able to do something with their superb fish other than sell it to the cannery. But even he never guessed things would get this crazy.

Today, Copper River salmon is a smash hit. And at the root of this success are a couple of big ideas, one that seems obvious today — getting the best fish and handling them carefully — and one that is still a bit wacky — a race to see which restaurant could serve the first Copper River king salmon of the season

As the Copper River season begins Wednesday, these fish will be one of the few name-dropped on menus. And the first fresh Copper River salmon of the season could fetch as much as $50 a pound.

But 30 years ago, almost none of the fish was even sold fresh.  When food marketing guru Jon Rowley offered the fishermen $3.50 a pound, they were overjoyed.

It's hard to believe it's been nearly a decade since I've been to Bristol Bay! In 2004, the price was a only .46 cents for big “panhandle” sockeye salmon. It was a amazing to see “walls” salmon slam into the nets, as we skipped over other gilnets in pursuit a few precious moments at the front of the pack. The season ripped by and I headed south to catch up on southeast Alaska salmon seining gig! I would enjoy the chance to get some updated photos of the fishery. I might have to make a 10 year anniversary return to the wicked waters of the Bristol Bay salmon run.

New York – This rather strange predator fish has the ability to breathe air and can live out of water for days under certain conditions, and frankly, is really not welcome in Central Park.

The rather ugly intruder is a northern snakehead fish, which is native to China, Russia and Korea, and for some weird reason, Harlem Meer. Able to breathe air and occasionally live out of water, the fish are known to prey on frogs and crayfish.

However, it is certainly not welcome and environmental officials are planning to survey a Central Park lake this week to search for this invasive predator fish. They state that it threatens to disrupt the ecosystem and that it is so disruptive, the state actually prohibits possession, sale and transport of the live fish and also of its eggs.

Signs have now gone up around Harlem Meer warning fisherman who catch one not to throw it back. In fact the signs ask anglers to “secure the fish” and “keep it in a secure container until it is picked up by officials.”

They are so serious about this that if park officials cannot be found at the boathouse, people are urged to call 311 and report the catch.

I snapped this sweet diorama of salmon eggs at the local DIPAC hatchery in Juneau. The hatchery offers tours throughout the summer and continues to be a successful chum salmon source for southeast Alaska.

You know it's time to go fishing when you make “cargo nets” for the kids to play on. Salmon season is just around the corner!
