Sitka Herring Update | 2011 Sitka Conflicts Settled In The Courtroom.

The Sitka Herring Sac Roe Fishery has produced some incredible headlines since the record breaking harvests in 2008. In the years since, The Shady Lady rolled over in 2010 after an intense collision that occurred earlier that same day. Then, in 2011, the Infinite Grace nearly sank because of broken rigging. The close quarters fishery has it fair share if collisions. However, no fisherman in his right mind would go looking for a collision. In 2011, a collision between the Arctic Fox and the Talia landed the boat owners in court. Here is the rest of the story. I believe this is the video of the actual collision. After the media, Deckboss shares the court details.

Deckboss | Every season, it seems, we see more and more evidence of Sitka’s cutthroat style of fishing, thanks to the proliferation of digital recording devices and YouTube videos.

Recently, we posted news on our sister blog, The Brig, that one seiner, Daniel Crome, had been charged with a misdemeanor in connection with a vessel collision last season.

Deckboss was curious to learn more about the case, so he requested copies of the charging documents from the Sitka court clerk.

As you will see, authorities had the benefit of audio and video recordings to make the case against Crome.

One wonders whether it’s time for changes at Sitka, to bring a bit more decorum into the fishery. And to reduce chances for a real tragedy.

A year ago, Clarence Helgevold Jr. was drunk when he got behind the wheel. His actions led to the death of George Larion.On Wednesday, Helgevold, 60, was sentenced to eight years with three and a half suspended for criminally negligent homicide, and one year with six months suspended for misdemeanor driving under the influence. He will serve five years in prison.Helgevold changed his plea to guilty last May, reducing the original charge of manslaughter, which would’ve imposed a longer jail sentence.The original charges stem from a Jan. 19, 2010 incident in which Helgevold hit the 46-year-old Larion’s snowmachine with his car. Larion was thrown from the snowmachine and died from his injuries on-scene, near the intersection of Brown’s Lake Road and Seclusion Street off of Funny River Road.

Fish Tech | CES 2012 Wrap Up

Every dawn of a New Year, the latest and greatest electronic gadgets are on display at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas. This year, huge OLED TVs wowed the crowd, but the real story is all about waterproof gadgets. Here’s a round up all the gadgets that stood out at the show.

Two companies, Liquipel and HzO have come out with a waterproof invisible nano technology coating that is applied internally and externally to any device. While, it showed the devices submerged, HzO described the technology as more of a preventative solution. Liquipel, appears to be pretty much the same technology with a different chemical makeup. The real difference is that Liquipel is available now for only 68 bucks. Both companies are hoping that these technologies are implemented at the factory level, making the process ubiquitous in all electronics.

A number of companies displayed their own waterproofing concepts in various devices. A few android devices like the XOOM 2 have a splash resistant coating, but the Pantech Element’s waterproofing allows the device to be submerged. The official waterproof rating is IP57. Will this be good enough? It’s great to see companies finally acknowledging the waterproofing issue. For now, I’ll stick to my Lifeproof case. Now, they just need gadgets that float.

The camera expo has been mashed together with CES this year and it’s a great fit. GoPro displayed the new HD Hero2 with a new Wifi BacPac. This will allow the camera to be remotely controlled via wristband or smartphone. The really cool ability of the Wifi Bacpac is networking and streaming of video. Up to 50 GoPros can exist on the same network. I expect we will see a lot of this at Winter X Games. I can’t wait to see what uses they come up with. It’s truly a great idea.

Lastly, The Parrot AR Drone 2.0 is just plain sweet. I’d like to think that I would use this to spot jumpers, but It’s really just a really cool toy. This might be nice for getting interesting video, though. I expect this technology to show up in cheaper forms in the coming year.

Its been clear and cold in Gastineau Channel the past few days. Even though, the temperatures are bone-chillingly cold, Juneau locals are excited to get out and absorb their rare dose of wintertime vitamin D. The entire lake in front of the glacier froze over, allowing for awesome pics of glacier ice. At times, it felt like an alien world out there. Its always hard to shake the idea that the ice could break at any given moment. Still the photos were worth it. I’m loving the new Sony Nex.

I had mixed reviews about the show from the beginning. The program only focused on one boat, which takes away from the competitive nature that is the focus of these kind of programs. Was it worth saving? Here’s a peek. After the vid is text from Sierra. The photo is a shot of Memry Anne’s Tattoo.

I wish I had better news to share but since I have been getting a lot questions and emails I figure it’s about time I let you all know whats really going on and why my show hasn’t been on TV. Last Friday I got the terrible phone call and found out TLC pulled the plug on Hook Line & Sisters.

It’s been a sore topic for me ever since, and a rough week learning how to cope with whats happened. Bottom line, I guess just not enough views to keep it profitable for the network.

Internet Bycatch | Hard Drives Made From Salmon DNA

It’s good smoked, straight up on the grill with a little lemon and butter, or rolled into sushi. And now, thanks to researchers at Taiwan’s Tsing Hua University and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, salmon is also good sandwiched between two electrodes. Using silver nanoparticles, a couple of electrodes, and a thin layer of salmon DNA, those researchers have developed a “write-once-read-many-times” (WORM) data-storage device that they think could eventually lead to a replacement for silicon.

Their device basically works based on the way silver atoms behave inside a thin film of salmon DNA. Shine a UV light on such a system, and the silver atoms will bunch into nanoparticles within the DNA film. Add electrodes to both sides of the film, and you’ve got an optical data storage device.

And here’s how it works: when there’s no (or little) charge passing through the device, only low (or no) current is allowed to travel through the device (which makes sense). That creates the device’s “off” position. If you slowly increase the voltage however, the device is unable to hold a higher charge. That is, until you reach a certain voltage threshold (about 2.6 volts), at which point the device suddenly switches to high conductivity with good retention of that state.

That switching ability above a certain voltage threshold creates two distinct “off” and “on” states that can be used to store data like any other optical data device. And the changes in conductivity are basically irreversible, meaning once a device has been switched, it stays in that conductive state (either on or off). That means you should be able to write something into a DNA-based data storage and then retrieve that info later.

Dutch Harbor Update | Baranof on the Rocks at Devil’s Point

The Baranof went on the rocks Monday morning at 9:39. The cause of the mishap has not been released. According to Coast Guard sources, the investigation findings will be known in about six months. There was no spill and no internal damage to the ship, and no injuries. 23,000 gallons of fuel and lube oil was on board. A good pull from the tug James Dunlap freed the vessel at around 12:20 p.m. Divers from Magone were inspecting the ship’s hull. Crew members expressed hope the vessel would be able to fish without delay. The Baranof is a former Coast Guard buoy tender and has ice-breaking capabilities.

1st Commercial Fishing Online Film Festival | Check Out The 2012 Winners

The past year has been an incredible time in the commercial fishing world. Record runs of salmon and sky high market prices have revived an industry that has seen its far share of hardship. Luckily for us, there are plenty of dedicated deckhand videographers in the ranks to catch all the action. The advent of smaller and better camera equipment has allowed amateurs to make amazing videos. Cameras like the GoPro HD have been a game changer for user generated content in the comfish world. Now, it’s possible to mount the camera to your head and capture all the nautical action up close. Some oy this year’s aspiring deckhands display amazing editing skills, while others embrace the use of raw footage and emotional scores. From strange to informative, these films are grouped into 5 different categories. The entire playlist is posted here for you to view at your leisure and I will be posting the various categories of videos on facebook, google+, and twitter thru the week. At the end of the week, the entire three hours of videos will stream back to back on Saturday the 14th on Justin.tv and Ustream. Most of the voting will be done on the Back Deck facebook page and the hashtag #Comfishfilmfest on twitter. Alright, grab some smoked salmon and enjoy the show.

Rules and regulations
All films have been uploading within the past year on YouTube or Vimeo. Obviously, they must be commercial fishing related and stand out from the rest of the pack. The video in the Highliner category that receives the most amount of likes or twitter buzz will get a brand new Lifeproof case for an iPhone 4S. New submissions can be provided via link and I will add the video. Here is a quick overview of the different categories.

Truly amazing! The marketing campaign obviously spent a ton of time of the naming this beast. It’s truly a thing of beauty. It kinda looks like a shuttle. Check out the video that follows. I can’t embed the video. Make sure to click thru to see it in action. The soundtrack is choice!

The fish are fed into the machine from a conveyor. The Gutmaster’s feeding mechanism hooks each fish as it arrives, which ensures each one is seated properly for maximum efficiency. The fish then passes through a series of automated knives, which slit its belly before a suction gun slurps out its entrails. A set of brushes then sweep out any remaining bits. Once cleaned, the fish passes through the beheading unit and is decapitated. If it’s roe season, the machine can be adjusted to eliminate the guts without damaging the roe sack, which is then removed by hand.

The Gutmaster8000 can process up to 30 fish a minute ranging in size from 1.5-8 kg. The entire process is controlled by a single worker from a touch screen at the front of the machine. This reduces the needed labour force and protects workers from the dangerous — potentially asthma-inducing — fish protein aerosols released when cleaning fish.

Dutch Harbor Update | Deadliest Catch Ready For 2012 Opener

The snow crab season is about to start up north in the Bering Sea. The season is technically open, but the crews are taking a break for the holiday season. Crabbers are beginning to migrate back to Dutch to start the opilio season, which has a great quota this year. The King crab season quota was smaller, but the price of King Crab is at its highest ever. The snow crab is expected to fetch a record price this season, as well.

The “Superbowl of Seining” Hits TLC Primetime.

One of Alaska‘s most awesome fisheries found its way to primetime last night on TLC. The new reality show will primarily focus on the commercial salmon season in Chignik, AK. However, the chaos of the Sitka Sac Roe Herring Fishery was showcased in the pilot episode. BBC, Nat Geo, and Discovery have all filmed the fishery in the past, but the sheer number of boats and the level of intensity is always a spectacle. Last night’s ramming and jamming on Hook, Line, and Sisters is proof that the fishery is full of surprises. The herring quota is expected to be huge this year and I can’t wait…

“What is the biggest herring set of 2010?”
That’s the most popular search term hitting the website right now.
I don’t have an official answer for this, but maybe we can get some feedback and figure it out. I’m going to call this section #docktalk! Comment here, or Tweet to #docktalk if you have any info. (Insert fishermen speculation) The best that I heard last year was from the F/V Lady Brenda, which had a set that was over 400 tons. I also believe that the F/V Mickey H had a huge one. The real story is the old tale of the fish that got away. The F/V Arctic Fox had a monster set that they were not able to keep. Fish Tech | The Fishermen Friendly iPad Navigation App

I doubt that any commercial fishing vessel would rely on simply an ipad to navigate the boat. However, it looks like the iPad could be useful on the vessel for something else than just streaming video. With AIS, GPS, and Wifi, you can easily turn that tech toy into a piece of hardened marine equipment. I highly suggest the Lifeproof iPhone or Ipad case before you decide to bring the iDevice to the fishing grounds. There are a number of different navigation apps for the iPad and iNavX rises to the top with easy chart downloads, AIS compatibility, and easy waypoint execution. The key here is the ability to download raster charts, the ones that look just like the old paper ones, directly to the iDevice as needed. The app will recognize your position and recommend charts in that area. Once the charts are downloaded, you can use the app offline. There are other apps for marine navigation, such as, Navionics and Navimatics. These apps sell for much cheaper, but you are stuck with proprietary charts that only work in that program. iNavX is a whopping 50 bucks on the app store and its a great purchase. You won’t need any other marine app on your boat, though. If you are a Mac guy, there is iNavX laptop software for Mac OSX.

I’m seeing a tons of search requests for herring news. So, here are the latest updates from Fish and Game. The quota is predicted to be massive in Sitka this year, at 29,008 tons. Behm Canal will be having a herring fishery this spring as well. Up to as many as 48 boats have the option to participate, yet it hardly ever draws large numbers. Togiak will also be having a healthy fishery this season. So, what kind of demand would it take to get a decent price this year? Its seems that the high volume of herring might affect the overall price. After last season it, would be nice to actually get paid a reasonable price. In the past the commercial fishery was as high as $2,000 a ton. Last season, we fished for $100 a ton. Alaska Commercial Fishing Viewpoints | F/V Loki

If traceability is the new trend in the seafood industry, then the F/V Loki and lokifish.com are who you should learning from. Since 1980, the Loki Fish Company has been a pioneer at direct sales and private marketing techniques in the Northwest. The vessel primarily focuses on salmon trolling and gillnetting in the waters of southeast Alaska. Captain Pete Knuston also owns a Puget Sound permit for salmon fishing, which has allowed him the unique opportunity to sell fish directly from the docks at the Fishermen’s Terminal. If you have ever since the fresh salmon sign as you go over the Ballard bridge, then the Loki Fish Company has done its job. They have made quite an impression on the internet, too. State of Things | The Future of JuneauTek

Wow, what a crazy year its been in the fishing world. Overall, its a good time to be a fisherman. Its also been pretty nuts on the website as well. I enjoy reading all the Comfish news and keeping the website up to date, but it can be daunting. So, I have started to use social media to make the tasks easier. I’m now using the Facebook and Google+ pages to post the most recent news articles. In general, its easier to comment on the articles this way. I’m always on the iPad these days, so its much easier just to copy and paste links to these sites. Of course we also have the twitter feed, @Juneautek, which is updated regularly. So check out the other sites and make sure to add, like, or follow. Content is typically different in each source. If I find something super interesting article then I will post it here. Mostly the Juneautek site will focus on original content and the news feeds will be left to social media. Thanks again for all the support. I have much more to come in the future. Tekoma translates into “snow capped peaks” from the traditional Navajo. You might be more familiar with the modern version, which is tacoma. Basically, these posts will be about various different ski resorts that I visit over the winter. I have a ski trip planned for after the new year, so stay tuned.
Lets start with Eaglecrest, which is truly a hidden treasure of southeast Alaska. Located on Douglas Island, just across from downtown Juneau, the resort offers a great escape to the long winters in southeast. Its not the typical tourist infused corporate monster than some ski resorts have devolved into. It’s actually a municipality of the city and runs much like a public pool. While it lacks in corporate flash, the community element is the driving force. Everyone knows everyone and no one is telling where the powder stash is. Next time you find yourself in Juneau, check it out. During the summer, it has an awesome zip line too.

The Little Herring Gets a Big Role | NYTimes.com

Listen up processors. Pickled herring is cool again!

In a fancy women’s department store in Osaka, Japan, earlier this year, shoppers lined up for one of the latest food fads in the country, jars of pickled herring.

“We Japanese love herring,” said Masayoshi Takayama, the chef and owner of Masa in the Time Warner Center in Manhattan. “At Masa we serve dried salted herring, soaked in rice water for five days and marinated in tosazu vinegar.” Then it is simmered in dried-bonito broth with soy sauce, sake and more vinegar.

That’s right, pickled herring is on one of New York’s priciest prix fixe menus.

Peter Shelsky, a catering chef, is also pickling his own herring, in the less rarified confines of his artisanal appetizing store in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn, Shelsky’s Smoked Fish.

And, with a bit more refinement, Laurent Manrique serves lightly smoked herring, imported from France, with boiled potatoes at Millesime, his French bistro in Manhattan.

“Surprisingly, smoked herring and quenelles de brochet are our two most popular appetizers,” he said.

What used to be food for Jewish grandfathers, particularly on holidays like Hanukkah, which starts next Tuesday night, is showing up on the menus of restaurants both hip and elegant.

Herring with wasabi and yuzu kosho paste is one of the haute Jewish dishes at Kutsher’s Tribeca. Benoit and Brasserie Julien both serve French smoked herring with potatoes. A notable dish at the dearly departed M. Wells in Queens was smoked herring Caesar salad.

Shoppers are finding a more appealing selection in stores. Herring used to be pickled in only wine sauce or cream sauce for Jewish holidays. No more. Now it’s in dill sauce, in curry sauce, with pickles, with mustard sauce.

“Whole Foods has much to do with this increased interest,” said Richard Schiff, the general manager of Acme Smoked Fish in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a main supplier in New York. “They want not just one or two herring jars, but lots.” And lightly smoked French herring is also now available to consumers at Whole Foods and other stores.

Ports of Call | Seattle, WA Fisherman’s Terminal

This massive port is home to over 600 boats, supplies over 10,000 jobs, and contains the majority of the Pacific fishing fleet. Its a world within its self, just nestled across from historic Ballard. The port facilitates nearly every ever fishery from trawlers to trollers. At any time of the year, you could easily wander down and find someone grinding, painting, or mending. This is also a great hub for any hopeful greenhorns who want to make their way to Alaska. The offices for most of the main processors such as Ocean Beauty and Trident are located close by and provide access to many of the factory processing jobs. The added benefit of keeping your boat in fresh water over the winter is a huge draw, but it means you must traverse the Ballard Locks to get back to the sea. Overall, the Fisherman‘s terminal is an icon of America‘s fishing fleet. If your reading this blog, I’m pretty sure you have been there once or twice. If not, it’s worth a stroll.

Sitka Herring Update | Massive Upcoming Quota

Amazing! There appears to be a huge bait explosion up and down the west coast. Squid, sardine, and herring have all been amazing fisheries the past few seasons. Every opener of the fishery usually takes about a 6,000 ton chunk. Basically, it means that it could be a long season in Sitka this spring. The way the fishery is managed this quota could take over three weeks to harvest. Ah, yes! The “Superbowl of Seining” lives up to its name. Here is a video from last year’s second opener. Made entirely on the iPhone 4.

An early number outlining how much herring the commercial seine fleet can catch is nearly 10,000 tons over last year’s amount.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game today announced a preliminary guideline harvest level, or GHL of 29,008 tons for the 2012 Sitka Sound sac roe herring fishery. The competitive and lucrative fishery takes place in the spring.

Last year’s GHL was 19,430 tons. The forecast amount for this year is based on predictions that show a large mass of mature herring returning in the upcoming season. The forecasting model uses abundance and age composition data from surveys conducted after last year’s spring fishery, along with data stretching back several years.

Fish Tech | Spot II GPS Messenger

This is a great idea for the smaller vessels like skiffs and such that don’t have room for a standard GPS. I personally will be using it for back country sking so I can track the unknown nether regions of Douglas island. The SOS feature is the key for any person or vessel in distress and the ability to send texts from nearly anywhere could come in handy, especially in emergencies. The best feature is to simply use it with your laptop. For only 149.99, it’s a sturdy, waterproof GPS with cool texting bonus features. The service will cost you another 99 bucks per year, though. Is is worth it? I’ve got one of these on my Christmas list, so I’ll have a review soon. Right, Santa?

Commercial dungy crabbing is about to start in Oregon. Actually, pots are soaking at the time of this post. After a doubtful start concerning the weight and meat ratio, crabbers are now fetching the highest price ever at 2.30 a pound. Typically, this is one of the most dangerous gigs a fisherman can endure. Not only is it labor intensive, the weather conditions off the Oregon coast during the winter are less than favorable. A fellow crew member of mine made 100,000 dollars last season, so it’s well worth the sacrifice. Good luck out there to all the captains and crew who participate in this grueling fishery.

Salmon Seining Hits Primetime!

It appears that Alaska salmon seining is about to hit primetime. TLC is continuing the Alaska reality TV trend with a program called Hook, Line, and Sisters. This will be the first time that salmon seining is showcased in a series. Long before the TLC gig, the Anderson clan made quite a few waves in the Sitka Sac Roe Herring Fishery. In 2010, the F/V Shady Lady was involved in one of the biggest collisions in the history of the fishery. Here’s some footage from the smash and crash in 2010. Stay tuned in up to the 30 second mark to see the bow to bow collision.

Now here is a video of the girls and there reaction to the rammin and jammin.

Looks like some serious damage. The cool part is that they got the set. This seems like a rough day on the water, huh? Well, it gets even crazier. At some point during the unload, the boat begins to roll over.

What a day? Luckily, the boat was tied to the tender and they were able to right the vessel once the herring was pumped out. So, that was the Shady Lady. Now, the boat is known as the Memry Anne. This year is Sitka, they got rammed again. Check here for Carnage In Sitka. I can’t help but wonder if they are targets or terrors. I guess the new show will fill in all the details. A lot has happened in the world of commercial fishing within the past year. Halibut has dominated the recent headlines with serious implications of a failed fishery. Whereas, commercial salmon fishing has garnered some of the highest prices and catch returns in years. The commercial fishing industry seems to be plagued with more than is fair share of highs and lows. So, hunker down and we will go over some of last years biggest headlines in what some call the “Deadliest Business.”

Salmon

Salmon dominated the news this year with recent hints of a virus blooming in wild pacific salmon population and a geneticly designed Frankenfish that would solve all of our salmon farming issues. Also record harvests In southeast and Chignik supplied plenty of headlines too. Of course, news of an impending industrial mine in the heart of Alaska‘s sockeye country was met with fierce opposition throughout the year.

Squid

Commercial squid fishing in California has seen a huge uptake in value within the last two seasons. In the past, the fishery could take up to six months to catch the quota of 180,000 tons. Last year they were done by Christmas. This year the boys were done by turkey day.

King Crab

Bering Sea King crab quotas were heavily cut this year, but record high prices and a quick season were great for consumers and producers. Southeast Alaskaeven got a chance at king crab this past October. Six years had passed since the last crab opener in the region, so locals were eager to cash in the on record prices.

Dungeness Crab

Dungy Crab soared this past season as Oregon delivered one of its highest valued harvests in years. The crab were selling for more than 2.65 in some regions.

Sitka Sac Roe Herring

Sitka Herring was seriously impacted by the Japanese tsunami this spring. Right before the herring started showing, the tsunami devastated most of the Japanese seafood market, including the buyers. The tragedy resulted in a huge drop in the ex vessel price of herring. In 2010, herring were 410 dollars a ton. This spring we were only able to get 100 dollars a ton.

Pacific Marine Expo 2011 Recap

The event was a massive success this year with the biggest turnout ever. Fisherman could find everything from Xtratufs to hatch covers. Of course there were plenty of marine gadgets, too. AIS is heating up as smaller vessels are adapting the new technology. There were even “booth babes!” The best part of the event was simply networking and meeting new fisherman from different regions and fisheries.

Squid Update | Amazing Biomass Calls For New Management

Commercial squid fishing is closing this weekend, but squid are still there in droves. The past two years have been incredible squid seasons. The quota was never even reached until last years mega haul. I’ve included an article that sheds light on the reasons behind this huge volume. Should more fishing be allowed? Commercial squid fishermen are enjoying a banner year and have asked the California Fish and Game Commission to take emergency action and increase the quota for market squid.

The Department of Fish and Game announced on Nov. 10 that the commercial fishery for market squid will close at noon Friday, Nov. 18.

The Commission was told Wednesday at its meeting in Santa Barbara that the squid will die whether they’re harvested or not. The Commission asked the Department of Fish and Game for an update on the harvest numbers and quota, and the Commission also asked the state’s Deputy Attorney General about the process for emergency regulations. Those details are expected to be worked out later today or at tomorrow’s conclusion of the two-day meeting in Santa Barbara.

Commissioner Richard Rogers, the chair of the panel, said there was a “mind-boggling bio mass” of squid. The commercial squid fishermen said the cold water event that exists off California has led to an explosion in all bait species, from krill to anchovies, sardines and squid. The “ocean is rich with fish right now,” one squid fisherman said. “There is a large krill population, and the squid are eating krill.” Fishermen believe the state’s quota for squid does not take into account boom years such as this one.

For anyone that has been lucky enough to find their way to Tenakee Springs, its impossible to forget. My first experience was on the decks of the F/V Coral Sea while summer salmon seining in 1999. At the time, I couldn’t imagine how people could live there. Over the years, we would pop into Tenakee Inlet for early pink salmon runs and I would always enjoy a good soak followed a beer at Rosie’s Cafe. I’m now lucky enough to spend Thanksgiving in Tenakee with my family. The best part is our tea kettle from 1999 is still there in the “Tea Kettle Garden.” Man, I love Tenakee. The Tiltin Hilton is coming down and a little girl named Ila has come to live here. At first glance, it might be hard to see how the two are connected, but they surely are and, taken together, they offer a clear glimpse into the future of our town.For decades, the Tiltin Hilton has been a Tenakee trademark, easily the most photographed place in town, right up there with the outhouse behind the fire hall. Its a one-room cabin in the traditional Tenakee style of hand-hewn logs, one narrow door and a couple of tiny windows. It might be over 100 years old. Nobody knows for sure.For perhaps 40 years, it has sat empty and unattended, its legal ownership in murky limbo. Strips of what used to be curtains hang limp in the broken out windows. A rusty tin roof has kept the rain and snow out, but the structure has been slowly decomposing from the ground up. Now, the rot reaches to the window frames. We call it the Tiltin Hilton because the whole thing leans like a drunkard into the hillside behind.

Is the End of Salmon Near?

A warming climate is likely to wipe out spring-run Chinook salmon in at least one California watershed by the century’s end, found a new study.

No matter which climate projections the researchers used, warmer waters spelled major trouble for the fish in the coming decades if people do nothing to help the fish. And the findings are likely to apply to a variety of salmon species up and down the West Coast, especially in California where temperatures are closest to the tipping point.

Commercial Market Squid Fishery to Close November 18, 2011

Based on landings information and projections, DFG has determined that the season’s harvest limit of 118,000 short tons of market squid will be reached by that date.The squid fishing season runs from April through the following March of each year, meaning the fishery will remain closed through March 31, 2012. Market squid remains the state’s largest and most lucrative commercial fishery, valued at over $73 million in 2010.

DFG has been tracking catches daily this fall in anticipation of reaching the harvest limit, which was established to ensure squid are not overharvested. The harvest limit is one of many constraints on the fishery, which has been managed under the state’s Market Squid Fishery Management Plan since 2005. The goals of the plan are to ensure long-term conservation and sustainability of the market squid resource, reduce the potential for overfishing and provide a framework for management.

In addition to the harvest limit, only a limited number of commercial squid fishing permits are issued, and a closure of the fishery on weekends is imposed to allow for periods of uninterrupted spawning each week.

The plan was developed under the provisions set forth by California’s Marine Life Management Act (MLMA), which became law in 1999. The MLMA created state policies, goals and objectives to govern the conservation, sustainable use and restoration of California’s living marine resources such as squid.

With the weather as bad as it was, its surprising the fleet wasn’t in more serious trouble. The smaller quota has allowed many boats to make early seasons of the king crab fisheries this winter.

The primary issues are waterproofing and durability. So, LifeProof is the only waterproof case that I have officially used and it does live up to its waterproofing claims. However, some loss of touch sensitivity is present. Overall, this is a must have case for anyone on a boat. The case is extremely thin and complements the iPhones design. King Crab Starts in Southeast Alaska Today.

Once again, fishermen will get the chance to harvest King crab in southeast Alaska. The outlook for the fishery is great. King crab are likely to sell for over 12$ lb. The morning weather is supposed to be starting with heavy winds and the lows may drop down into the snow zone on the first evening. All in all, it sounds like its going to be a great short fishery. Red King Prices Up After Quota Cuts

Less is more this season for Bristol Bay red king crab. The fishery’s quota was cut in half, but the price has soared.

When the season opened ten days ago, Jake Jacobsen, executive director of ICE, the largest crabber cooperative, was expecting the final price for red king to be around $10 per pound. That would have been a new record and almost three dollars more than last year. Now he says that estimate is low.

“Our advance price was raised to $9 and final prices we are expecting, of course, to be much more than that.”

A third of the 7.8 million pound quota has already been harvested.

“Probably the quickest season… fastest catch rate that I can remember since rationalization.”

The fishing is a little faster this season. Last year crabbers were catching an average of 18 legal red kings per pot lift. This year’s preliminary number is 20.

A smaller quota and faster fishing mean some boats are already done. Fifty-five vessels started the Bristol Bay season, but as of today that number has dropped to forty-one.

The Bristol Bay season doesn’t officially close until January 15th.

The first thing fishermen want to know is the prices for their fish, but sometimes that can be tough to come by. Final sales for most of Alaska’s seafood are made long after a fishery closes, and settlements to fishermen may not be known for several months.

But there is an easy way to find out how fish prices are tracking. The state Department of Revenue’s Tax Division compiles prices for every kind of fish and shellfish caught by Alaska fishermen by region. The prices are not in-season; they show a snapshot of the previous year and how fish prices are trending.

Here’s a sampler from 2010: Alaska halibut went from a low of $4.49 per pound on the Alaska Peninsula, to a high of $5.17 in the Cook Inlet region. The highest price average paid for sablefish was $5.97 at Juneau/Yakutat to a low of $5.46 at Ketchikan/Craig. Herring at Bristol Bay averaged 7 cents per pound last year to a high of 65-cents at Ketchikan. Octopus fetched 45 cents at Kodiak and a nickel per pound for squid. Gray cod got the lowest price at 13-cents at Petersburg/Wrangell to a high of 49-cents at Sitka/Pelican. Lingcod went for a low of 46 cents at Kodiak, up to $1.22 at Juneau.

Kodiak fishermen got the lowest price for Chinook salmon at just 64 cents per pound compared to $5.41 at Prince William Sound. Chums saw a low of 28 cents at Bristol Bay to a high of 86 cents at Sitka/ Pelican. Cohos fetched 50 cents a pound at the Alaska Peninsula and averaged $1.55 at Sitka. The lowest price for pinks was at Cook Inlet at 30 cents to a high of 44 cents at Kodiak, Petersburg and Wrangell. For sockeye salmon the lowest price was at Bristol Bay at $1.07; the high topped $2 a pound at the Prince William Sound region.

There are prices for 15 different kinds of rockfish on the list – the lowest paid was a dime paid at Kodiak for red banded rockfish to a high of $1.42 for thorny heads at Dutch Harbor The priciest Alaska seafood last year? Spot shrimp at $7.81delivered to Juneau/Yakutat, followed by Bristol Bay red king crab $7.42 per pound. The lowest valued were rex sole, flathead sole and arrowtooth flounder, each at 2 pennies per pound.
